Common questions

How is PPF interest calculated?

Each month, interest is worked out on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month. The twelve monthly amounts are added to your account on 31 March, so it compounds once a year. Open "How we calculated this" to see it with your numbers.

Why should I deposit in PPF before the 5th?

Money that reaches your account after the 5th does not count for that month's interest. Depositing 1.5 lakh between 1 and 5 April every year gives about 40.68 lakh after 15 years at 7.1 percent; depositing the same amount late in March gives about 2.7 lakh less.

How much will 1.5 lakh a year in PPF give after 15 years?

At 7.1 percent, deposited by 5 April each year, about 40,68,209 rupees: 22.5 lakh deposited and about 18.18 lakh of tax-free interest. The rate is reviewed every quarter, so the real figure will move with it.

What happens after PPF matures?

You can close it and take the full amount tax-free, or extend it in 5-year blocks. To keep depositing, submit the extension form within one year of maturity. If you do nothing, it continues without deposits and keeps earning interest.

Is PPF interest taxable?

No. PPF interest and the maturity amount are tax-free under both tax regimes. Only the deduction for what you deposit is limited to the old regime.

What if I miss the minimum 500 rupees in a year?

The account becomes inactive. You can restart it by paying 500 rupees for each missed year plus a 50 rupee fee per year.

Can I take money out of PPF before 15 years?

Partly. A loan is possible from the 3rd to the 6th year, and partial withdrawals from the 7th year. Closing early is allowed only after 5 years and for specific reasons, with 1 percent less interest for the whole period. The "When can I use my money?" section shows the exact amounts for each year of your account.

How much can I withdraw from PPF?

From the 7th year, once a year, up to half of the lower of two balances: the one at the end of the 4th year before, or the one at the end of last year. With 1.5 lakh a year at 7.1 percent, that is about 2.58 lakh in year 7. Withdrawals are tax-free and never have to be repaid.

Is PPF better than an FD?

For someone paying tax, often yes. At the 30 percent slab, a tax-free 7.1 percent equals a taxable FD of about 10.3 percent, which no bank offers. The trade-off is the 15-year lock-in, with only loans and partial withdrawals along the way.
